Booking a massage should not require research. But if you have ever looked at a treatment menu and wondered what the difference actually is between a customized massage and a deep tissue one, or whether cupping is going to leave marks, or how long an appointment you should book, you are not alone. Those are the questions we answer at the front desk every day.

So this is the whole thing in one place. What we offer in Winnipeg, how to pick, what it costs, what your insurance will cover, and what happens when you walk in.

The types of massage we offer in Winnipeg

Customized Massage

This is what most people book, and the name is literal. Rather than choosing a technique off a list, you tell your therapist what is going on and they build the session around it. Tight shoulders from a desk. Low back that flares up after yard work. General stress you cannot shake. One area or full body.

If you are unsure what to book, book this. It is the most flexible option we have and your therapist will adjust as they go.

Deep tissue and relaxation

Worth clearing something up, because it confuses a lot of people. Deep tissue and relaxation are not separate services on our menu. They are pressure and intent, and both live inside a customized massage.

Relaxation work uses broader, slower strokes and lighter to moderate pressure, with the goal of calming your nervous system. Deep tissue works more slowly into specific areas with firmer pressure to address stubborn tension and adhesions.

Deeper is not better. It is just different. Plenty of people book deep tissue because they assume it is the more serious choice and then spend an hour braced against it, which defeats the point. Tell your therapist what you actually want and speak up during the session if the pressure is not right. They would much rather you said something.

Hot Stone Massage

Smooth basalt stones are heated and used along with hands to work the muscles. The heat penetrates more deeply and gets tissue to let go faster than hands alone, which makes this a good choice when you are carrying a lot of tension or when you simply want the most comforting version of an hour on the table.

It is also, unsurprisingly, our most requested treatment between November and March.

Cupping Massage

Suction cups are applied to the skin to lift tissue rather than compress it, which is the opposite of what hands do. That makes it useful for areas that have not responded to regular massage, and it is popular with people dealing with persistent upper back and shoulder tightness.

Yes, it can leave circular marks. They are not bruises in the usual sense and they typically fade within a few days to a week. If you have a wedding or a beach holiday coming up, mention it and your therapist will plan around it.

Prenatal Massage

Pregnancy massage is not just a regular massage performed on someone who happens to be pregnant. Positioning changes, bolstering changes, and certain areas are worked differently or avoided. Our prenatal appointments are set up specifically for this, which is why they are a separate booking rather than an add-on.

We see a lot of clients through their second and third trimesters, often every week or two. If you are pregnant and considering massage, check with your care provider first, then book prenatal specifically rather than a customized session.

Couples Massage

Two people, two therapists, one room, at the same time. Popular for anniversaries and birthdays, and equally popular with friends, siblings and parent and adult child pairs. It does not have to be romantic.

These have to be booked by phone at 431-482-2226 rather than online, because we need to coordinate two therapists and the right room.

One note: not every therapist offers every modality, so if you have your heart set on cupping or hot stone, mention it when you book and we will match you with the right person.

How to choose

If you are still stuck, this is roughly how we would steer you.

You have a specific problem. One area that hurts, a recurring issue, something that has been bothering you for weeks. Book a customized massage and tell your therapist exactly where. Thirty or 45 minutes is enough for a single area.

You are carrying general tension and stress. Customized, 60 or 75 minutes, and say you want moderate pressure and full body.

You want the most comfortable possible hour. Hot stone.

Regular massage has not touched it. Cupping.

You are pregnant. Prenatal, after checking with your care provider.

It is an occasion. Couples.

On length, 30 minutes handles one area. Sixty minutes is the standard full body session and what most people book. Seventy five and 90 give the therapist room to work an area thoroughly and still cover the rest of you. Two hours is genuinely a different experience and worth it at least once.

What massage costs in Winnipeg

Most clinics in the city that publish their rates land between roughly $85 and $125 for 60 minutes. Ours sit in that range, and we publish the full list rather than making you call.

A 60 minute customized massage is $110 before GST. Thirty minutes is $65, 90 minutes is $160. Hot stone starts at $140 for 60 minutes, cupping at $82 for 30, and prenatal at $95 for 45.

Full pricing for every treatment and length is in our detailed guide to massage prices and insurance coverage in Winnipeg, along with what your benefits will and will not cover.

Insurance and direct billing

Short version: if you have extended health benefits, massage is very likely covered, and we can usually bill your plan directly so you are not paying up front and waiting for reimbursement.

The part most people do not know is that coverage depends on who performs the treatment. Massage therapy is not yet a regulated profession in Manitoba, so anyone here can call themselves a massage therapist. Insurers know that, which is why most plans only reimburse treatment from a registered therapist who is a member in good standing of a recognized professional association.

Every massage therapist at our Winnipeg location is registered. That is a deliberate hiring standard, and it is what makes direct billing possible.

We submit most often to Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life and Manulife, along with Maximum Benefit, People Corporation, ClaimSecure, Desjardins, Johnston Group and Coughlin and Associates. Bring your policy and certificate numbers to your first appointment.

What actually happens at your first appointment

Nothing surprising, but knowing helps if you have never been.

Arrive about ten minutes early. There is a short health history form, and it matters more than it looks. It flags anything your therapist needs to work around, and it is also part of what makes your treatment eligible for insurance reimbursement.

Your therapist will talk with you before starting. What is bothering you, what you want from the session, what pressure you prefer. This is the moment to be specific.

You undress to your comfort level and get under the sheet. Proper draping means only the area being worked is uncovered at any time. Nothing else is exposed, ever, and you can leave on whatever you want to leave on.

During the session, speak up. Too much pressure, not enough, too cold, the music, the face cradle. None of it is a bother. Your therapist cannot feel what you feel.

Afterward, drink some water and expect to feel a bit worked over the next day if you had deep tissue work, in the way you would after a hard workout. That fades.

How often should you go?

It depends entirely on why you are coming.

If you are managing a specific injury or flare up, weekly for a few weeks then tapering off is common. If you are dealing with ongoing tension from work or training, every two to four weeks tends to hold things steady. If massage is primarily about stress and recovery for you, monthly or every six weeks works well.

Your therapist will give you an honest read on what makes sense for your situation, and if you do not need to come back as often as you assumed, they will tell you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best type of massage to book if I do not know what I need?

A customized massage. Your therapist builds the session around what you tell them, so it works whether you have a specific problem or general tension.

What is the difference between deep tissue and relaxation massage?

Pressure and intent rather than two separate treatments. Relaxation uses broader, lighter strokes to calm the nervous system. Deep tissue works more slowly and firmly into specific areas. Both are available within a customized massage.

How long should my massage be?

Thirty minutes for a single area, 60 minutes for a standard full body session, and 75 or 90 minutes if you want one area worked thoroughly without giving up full body coverage.

Does cupping leave marks?

It can leave circular marks that usually fade within a few days to a week. Tell your therapist if you have an event coming up.

Do you direct bill insurance for massage in Winnipeg?

Yes. All of our Winnipeg massage therapists are registered, which allows us to direct bill most major extended health plans including Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life and Manulife.

Do I need to book couples massage by phone?

Yes, at 431-482-2226, so we can coordinate two therapists and the right room.
